The real challenge with artificial intelligence lies in human readiness rather than just AI implementation, according to a recent report. (Representative)
By 2027, artificial intelligence is projected to generate more employment opportunities than it eliminates, according to a new report released Monday that challenges prevailing fears about widespread job losses.
Research compiled by Gartner indicates that AI's workforce impact will be predominantly positive, shifting the conversation from job displacement concerns toward broader workforce transformation strategies.
These findings were presented at the Gartner IT Symposium/Xpo 2025 in Kochi, where industry analysts addressed an audience of more than 1,100 CIOs and information technology leaders.
While AI will automate numerous low-complexity tasks, Gartner emphasized that it will simultaneously create new roles and demand entirely different skill sets across industries.
The report highlighted that preparing humans to work effectively with AI represents a greater challenge than merely implementing the technology itself, requiring new mindsets and capabilities.
According to Gartner's July 2025 survey involving over 700 CIOs, AI integration into IT work will be comprehensive by 2030, with no IT tasks remaining exclusively human-performed.
The survey projects that 75 percent of IT tasks will involve human-AI collaboration, while AI will independently handle the remaining 25 percent of responsibilities.
Analysts observed that few organizations are currently taking concrete steps to prepare their workforce for this significant transition.
Arun Chandrasekaran, Distinguished VP Analyst at Gartner, recommended that companies begin workforce restructuring immediately rather than waiting for disruption.
Instead of implementing job cuts, he suggested limiting recruitment for routine positions while redirecting existing talent toward emerging AI-powered areas that generate revenue.
This strategic approach, Chandrasekaran noted, would enable organizations to enhance productivity while developing teams equipped to capture long-term value from AI technologies.
Gartner analysts further emphasized that skill requirements will undergo substantial change in the AI era, with tasks like information summarization, content searching, and text translation becoming less significant as AI assumes these functions.
Conversely, certain human abilities will become more valuable, including critical thinking, effective communication, problem-solving capabilities, and the skill to direct AI systems. Gartner cautioned that excessive AI dependence risks skill atrophy, necessitating regular employee assessment and upskilling initiatives.
The report also stressed the importance for organizations to evaluate their AI readiness across three key dimensions: financial considerations, technical capabilities, and vendor relationships.
A May 2025 survey revealed that 74 percent of CIOs are either merely breaking even or experiencing financial losses on their AI investments, primarily due to underestimated expenses in areas such as training programs and change management initiatives. Gartner advised companies to carefully determine which costs they are prepared to support in their AI transformation journey.
