New Delhi: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has expressed profound shock regarding the tragic bus accident in Saudi Arabia involving at least 42 Indian nationals. He assured that Indian diplomatic missions in Saudi Arabia are providing comprehensive assistance to those affected.
In his statement on social media platform X, Jaishankar conveyed: "Deeply shocked at the accident involving Indian nationals in Medinah, Saudi Arabia. Our Embassy in Riyadh and Consulate in Jeddah are giving fullest support to Indian nationals and families affected by this accident. Sincere condolences to the bereaved families. Pray for the speedy recovery of those injured."
According to preliminary reports, the incident occurred when a bus transporting Umrah pilgrims from Mecca to Medina collided with a diesel tanker at approximately 1:30 am (IST) near Mufrihat. Khaleej Times reported that most passengers on the bus were from Hyderabad, Telangana.
Lok Sabha MP Asaduddin Owaisi confirmed that at least 42 people from Hyderabad have lost their lives in this tragic accident. Owaisi stated: "Forty-two Hajj pilgrims who were travelling from Mecca to Medina were on a bus that caught fire... I spoke to Abu Mathen George, Deputy Chief of Mission at the Indian Embassy in Riyadh, and he assured me that they are gathering information about the matter."
Owaisi has contacted two Hyderabad-based travel agencies and shared passenger details with both the Riyadh Embassy and the Foreign Secretary. He has appealed to the Union Government, particularly External Affairs Minister Dr. S Jaishankar, to facilitate the repatriation of remains and ensure proper medical treatment for any injured individuals.
The Consulate General of India in Jeddah has described the incident as "tragic" and established a 24/7 control room with the contact number 8002440003 to provide assistance and information.
