Thousands of Mexicans protested nationwide on Saturday under the "Generation Z" banner, decrying escalating violence following the recent public assassination of an anti-crime mayor.
In Mexico City, a confrontation erupted when a small group of masked protesters dismantled barriers around the National Palace, the residence of President Claudia Sheinbaum, leading riot police to respond with tear gas, according to Reuters witnesses.
Mexico City's public safety secretary Pablo Vazquez reported that 100 police officers sustained injuries, with 40 requiring hospitalization. Additionally, 20 civilians were injured in the confrontation, Vazquez informed local media outlet Milenio.
Authorities detained 20 individuals and cited another 20 for "administrative offenses."
Parallel demonstrations occurred across various Mexican cities, including in Michoacan state, where public outrage has intensified following the November 1 murder of Uruapan Mayor Carlos Manzo, who was fatally shot during a public Day of the Dead celebration.
Some Mexico City protesters directed their frustration at Sheinbaum's political party, chanting "Out, Morena." Others demanded stronger government action against crime and violence, shouting "Carlos did not die, the government killed him."
A collective identifying itself as "Generation Z Mexico," which organized the protests, has circulated a "manifesto" on social media stating they are non-partisan and represent Mexican youth who are exhausted by violence, corruption, and power abuses.
Generation Z encompasses individuals born between 1997 and 2012, following the millennial generation. Protest movements worldwide have adopted this designation to advocate for social and political reforms.
President Sheinbaum's administration has questioned the protests' underlying motives, suggesting they were largely orchestrated by right-wing political opponents and amplified by social media bot networks.
