Trump Administration Designates Four European Leftist Groups As Foreign Terrorist Organizations Following Kirk Assassination

President Donald Trump's administration has officially labeled four European leftist organizations as terrorist groups following conservative activist Charlie Kirk's assassination. The designated groups include an Italian anarchist network, two Greek bombing groups, and a German anti-fascist organization, all with histories of violent actions but no operational presence in the United States. This move follows Trump's earlier executive order classifying antifa as a domestic terrorist organization.

Trump Designates 4 European Antifa Groups As Terrorist Organisations

President Donald Trump's administration has officially designated four European leftist groups as terrorist organizations, following through on his commitment to take action against left-wing extremists after the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.

The four European networks targeted by this designation appear to have no operational presence within the United States. They include an Italian anarchist group known for sending explosive packages to European officials in 2003, two Greek networks associated with bombing incidents at riot police and labor department buildings in Athens, and a German anti-fascist organization whose members were prosecuted for attacking neo-Nazis in Dresden.

While Europe has a substantial history of left-wing political violence, studies from the Justice Department and other sources indicate that political violence in the United States has predominantly come from right-wing sources in recent decades. However, there has been an increase in politically motivated attacks across the ideological spectrum in America recently, culminating in Kirk's fatal shooting in September by an assailant allegedly motivated by opposition to Kirk's stance on transgender issues.

The administration's announcement claims that "Anarchist militants have waged terror campaigns in the United States and Europe, conspiring to undermine the foundations of Western Civilization through their brutal attacks."

This designation enables the administration to target any financial support these networks might have in the United States. It's worth noting that most anarchist and antifa (anti-fascist) groups are typically loose affiliations rather than formal organizations, with individuals joining for specific actions.

Some of these groups advocate violence only against property, not people. One of the Greek networks reportedly called ahead before detonating bombs to ensure people could evacuate, resulting in no injuries. Although European leftist groups may share ideological similarities, law enforcement investigations have generally not found evidence of resource sharing between them.

The designation announcement came in the evening in Europe, and governments in the affected countries did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Such designations have precedent, particularly regarding Greek far-left and anarchist groups that have targeted U.S. officials, some of which have been listed as terrorist organizations by the United States since the 1970s.

This action follows Trump's earlier executive order designating antifa as a domestic terror organization two weeks after Kirk's assassination, though the practical implications remain unclear since domestic groups cannot be included on the State Department's list of foreign terrorist organizations.

Trump had also previously directed the Justice Department to investigate ActBlue, the Democratic Party's primary fundraising platform.

Among the European groups targeted, the International Revolutionary Front (also known as the Informal Anarchist Federation) is the most prominent. This group first gained notoriety in 2003-2004 by sending explosive packages to then-European Commission President Romano Prodi.

In 2012, members of this group shot and wounded the chief executive of Italian nuclear power plant builder Ansaldo Nucleare, targeting his legs in a revival of a 1970s anarchist tactic known as "gambizzazione" - shooting someone in the leg to maim and intimidate. Two group members received 10-year prison sentences with terrorism charge enhancements for this attack.

The group has also claimed responsibility for letter bombs sent to former Deutsche Bank chief Josef Ackermann at his Frankfurt offices in 2011 and to Italian newspaper offices and foreign embassies.

The other designated groups include Armed Proletarian Justice, which attempted to bomb an Athens riot police building in December 2023; Revolutionary Class Self-Defense, which claimed credit for bombings at Greece's labor department and a train company; and Antifa Ost (East), whose members were convicted in 2023 for hammer attacks against neo-Nazis in eastern Germany.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, a Trump ally, had previously designated Antifa Ost as a terrorist organization after Kirk's killing, stating he was following Trump's lead in targeting left-wing extremism.
