Newly appointed Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi revealed on Thursday that she typically sleeps only two to four hours nightly, acknowledging this minimal rest is "bad for my skin." Her admission came during a legislative committee meeting where she addressed questions about Japan's notorious work culture.
This revelation follows recent controversy when Takaichi scheduled a 3 am meeting with staff to prepare for a parliamentary session, raising concerns about her approach to work-life balance.
When questioned about efforts to reduce Japan's traditionally long working hours, Takaichi defended ongoing discussions about potentially extending overtime limits. She argued that workers and employers have varying needs, noting that some individuals take on second jobs for financial stability while businesses implement strict overtime restrictions.
Takaichi assured lawmakers that any policy changes would prioritize workers' health. "If we can create a situation where people can properly balance childcare and caregiving responsibilities according to their wishes, and also be able to work, enjoy leisure time, and relax -- that would be ideal," she stated.
Japan's work culture has long been problematic, with "karoshi" - death from overwork - recognized as a serious social issue in the country.
As Japan's first female prime minister, Takaichi took office last month and promptly declared she would "discard the term 'work-life balance'" for herself, emphasizing she would "work, work, work, work, and work."
Since assuming leadership, she has maintained a demanding schedule, participating in regional meetings and holding bilateral discussions with international leaders including US President Donald Trump, Chinese President Xi Jinping, and South Korean President Lee Jae-myung.
