Michael Duarte, popularly known online as "FoodWithBearHands," was fatally shot by a Texas sheriff's deputy following an incident where he allegedly threatened the officer with a knife. The Medina County Sheriff's Office reported that the confrontation took place on November 8 in Castroville, Texas, after authorities responded to an emergency call about a man behaving erratically while wielding a knife.
According to reports, when the deputy arrived at the scene, Duarte was instructed multiple times to drop his weapon and surrender to the ground. However, he disregarded these commands and instead rushed toward the officer while reportedly shouting, "I'm going to kill you." The deputy discharged her weapon twice. Despite receiving immediate medical attention at the scene, Duarte was transported to a hospital in San Antonio where he was later pronounced dead.
The Medina County Sheriff's Office stated in their official release that "Duarte was exhibiting erratic behavior and making threats to kill everyone." They further noted that "He was attempting to assault Fire and EMS personnel who had responded to the scene as the deputy pulled up."
Originally from California, Duarte had built a substantial following on social media platforms through his barbecue and grilling content. Reports suggest he was experiencing a mental health crisis at the time of the incident.
Duarte's talent agency, Alooma Media Group, confirmed his passing in a social media announcement on Sunday, extending heartfelt condolences and remembering him as a devoted husband, loving father, brother, and loyal friend.
"It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of our valued client and dear friend, Michael Duarte," the agency wrote in their statement.
"Michael was so much more than a client to us at Alooma. He was a true and loyal partner, a trusted collaborator, and above all, a remarkable person. His passion, professionalism, and creativity left a lasting mark not only on our team but on everyone who had the privilege of working with him."
A GoFundMe campaign has been established to assist with funeral expenses and provide support for Duarte's family. The funds raised will help return him to California and support his wife Jessica and their 6-year-old daughter Oakley.
