Pakistan Parliament Grants Army Chief Asim Munir Expanded Powers and Lifetime Immunity

Pakistan's parliament has passed a constitutional amendment on Wednesday which significantly expands the authority of the country's army chief while simultaneously reducing the jurisdiction of the Supreme Court, a move that has sparked criticism for potentially undermining democratic principles.

Under this amendment, Army Chief Asim Munir will be elevated to the newly created position of Chief of Defence Forces, formally granting him command over not just the army but also the navy and air force. The amendment further stipulates that upon completion of his term, he will retain his military rank and be granted lifetime legal immunity.
