At least 37 individuals lost their lives and 24 others sustained injuries when a bus tumbled into a ravine following a collision with a truck in Peru, according to a regional Health Department official who spoke to AFP on Wednesday.
The incident, which occurred in Arequipa in southern Peru, represents one of the most severe accidents in the South American nation in recent years.
The tragedy unfolded early morning along a section of the Panamericana Sur highway, a major route connecting Peru with neighboring Chile.
"We have confirmed 37 fatalities," stated Walther Oporto, the regional health manager of Arequipa, who also noted 24 additional injured survivors.
The Llamosas company-operated bus was traveling from Chala, a town in Caraveli province, to Arequipa and was transporting 60 passengers at the time of the accident.
According to local media reports citing firefighter accounts, the vehicle plummeted approximately 200 meters (650 feet) into a deep ravine after experiencing a head-on collision with a pickup truck while navigating a curve.
Peru frequently experiences traffic accidents due to various factors including excessive vehicle speeds, poor road conditions, inadequate signage, and insufficient enforcement by authorities.
