United States:
Jack Schlossberg, the grandson of former President John F Kennedy, has announced his candidacy for the US House of Representatives through a social media post that emphasized rising living costs while criticizing the current administration.
The 32-year-old Kennedy scion aims to replace retiring Congressman Jerry Nadler in New York's heavily Democratic 12th Congressional district during the November 3, 2026 midterm elections.
Known for his distinctive social media presence, Schlossberg positions himself as a progressive within the Democratic Party's left wing. He has been vocal about the need for party reform and has endorsed left-leaning figures like New York mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani, 34.
Schlossberg may face significant competition to secure the Democratic nomination, depending on potential primary challengers.
In his Instagram announcement posted late Tuesday, he highlighted what he described as a "crisis at every level," referencing cuts to education, healthcare, social programs, and alleged corruption.
His official campaign exploration began in September following Nadler's retirement announcement from the district representing Manhattan's middle section.
"This district should have a representative who can harness the creativity, energy and drive of this district and translate that into political power in Washington," Schlossberg stated in his announcement video.
"I'm not running because I have all the answers to our problems. I'm running because the people of New York 12 do."
In previous comments to The New York Times, he noted that "if Zohran Mamdani and I have anything in common, it's that we are both trying to be authentic versions of ourselves."
Leveraging his substantial social media following, Schlossberg has also been critical of President Donald Trump.
"The President has made almost $1 billion this year. He's picking winners and losers from inside the Oval Office. It's cronyism, not capitalism," he declared in his announcement.
