Ukraine's anti-corruption investigators have leveled serious accusations against Timur Mindich, a close associate of President Volodymyr Zelensky, alleging his involvement in a $100 million corruption scheme in the energy sector.
On Tuesday, prosecutors from the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office (SAPO) claimed that Mindich, who co-owns Zelensky's former media production company Kvartal 95, "exercised control over the accumulation, distribution, and legalisation of money obtained through criminal means in the energy sector of Ukraine."
During a pre-trial hearing for another suspect, prosecutors explicitly mentioned that Mindich leveraged his "friendly relations with the president of Ukraine" to facilitate these alleged criminal activities.
The investigation has also implicated Justice Minister German Galushchenko, who previously served as energy minister for four years. According to SAPO, Galushchenko received "personal benefits" from Mindich in exchange for granting control over financial flows in the energy sector.
This case represents the latest development in a widening corruption scandal that has emerged at a particularly sensitive time, as Ukraine's energy infrastructure continues to endure persistent Russian attacks since the February 2022 invasion.
The National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) announced on Monday that their 15-month investigation had uncovered an elaborate money laundering operation in the energy sector, resulting in five arrests and charges against seven individuals. NABU investigators conducted extensive raids across the country as part of this probe.
Oleksandr Abakumov, who heads NABU's investigating team, revealed on Ukrainian state television that Mindich had departed the country shortly before the raids commenced.
The allegations of massive embezzlement from the energy sector during a period of widespread power shortages and critical infrastructure damage have sparked renewed public outrage.
The corruption scandal comes at a particularly challenging time for Zelensky's administration, as eliminating systemic corruption remains a key condition for Ukraine's European Union membership aspirations. The president faced significant backlash earlier this year from both Ukrainian citizens and Brussels officials when he attempted to bring the independent anti-corruption bodies, NABU and SAPO, under government control.
