The BBC chairman Samir Shah has formally apologized for an "error of judgement" in the editing of US President Donald Trump's speech that created an impression of direct incitement to violence, leading to the resignations of the broadcaster's director general and head of news following impartiality concerns raised by a former standards adviser regarding the 2021 US Capitol attack coverage.

The BBC's director general and head of news tendered their resignations on Sunday.

On Monday, the BBC's chairman issued an apology for what he termed an "error of judgement" regarding the editing of a speech by US President Donald Trump, an incident that has led to significant leadership departures at the British broadcasting corporation.

"We acknowledge that the editing of the speech created an impression of a direct incitement to violent action. The BBC wishes to apologize for this error of judgement," stated Samir Shah in correspondence addressed to a parliamentary oversight committee.

The resignations of both the BBC's director general and news chief occurred on Sunday following revelations that a former external standards consultant had expressed concerns about impartiality issues with the editing of Trump's speech, which suggested he had directly provoked the 2021 US Capitol attack.
