Researchers in Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh have made an extraordinary discovery along the banks of the Sahansara River - a fossil believed to belong to a Triceratops, the iconic three-horned dinosaur that roamed Earth millions of years ago.
The excavation revealed what experts are identifying as potentially the nasal horn of a Triceratops, representing a significant paleontological find in the region.
Mohammad Umar Saif, founder of the Natural History and Conservation Centre in Saharanpur, explained: "The newly discovered fossil is thought to be from a Triceratops, specifically a part of its nose. While we cannot confirm with absolute certainty that it belongs to a Triceratops, its characteristics closely match those of Triceratops fossils discovered worldwide. The morphology, shape, and dimensions are remarkably similar."
Triceratops typically inhabited Earth during the Late Cretaceous period, spanning from approximately 100.5 million years ago to 66 million years ago, according to Saif.
The researcher highlighted the exceptional preservation of the specimen: "This fossil is remarkably well-preserved, having completely transformed into sandstone through extensive mineralization. This occurred as it remained buried in the Himalayan foothills for an estimated 35-40 million years, making this an important discovery."
In recent years, the area has yielded numerous fossils dating back millions of years, attracting considerable attention from the scientific community and paleontologists.
