A 6.1 magnitude earthquake struck Indonesia's Central Papua province in the early hours of Friday, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS).
The shallow tremor's epicenter was located approximately 28 kilometers (17 miles) south of Nabire town, situated on the Indonesian portion of the large Pacific island shared with Papua New Guinea.
While the USGS measured the quake at 6.1 magnitude with a depth of 10 kilometers, Indonesia's BMKG agency reported a higher 6.6 magnitude and greater depth of 24 kilometers, noting several smaller aftershocks following the main event.
Indonesia, comprising thousands of islands across its vast archipelago, regularly experiences seismic activity due to its location on the Pacific "Ring of Fire" - a horseshoe-shaped belt of intense earthquake and volcanic activity where tectonic plates collide, extending from Japan through Southeast Asia and across the Pacific basin.
The quake's representational image shows typical earthquake damage, though specific impacts from this particular event were not detailed in the initial report.
