The renowned Louvre Museum's most significant security vulnerability wasn't its physical defenses but rather its digital security password. Shockingly, the museum protected its core systems with an embarrassingly simple password: "LOUVRE".
Tesla CEO and billionaire Elon Musk expressed his astonishment on social media platform X with a simple "Wow" in response to this revelation.
This security lapse was uncovered following a brazen $102 million heist at the Paris institution. Four thieves executed a daring seven-minute operation using a moving lift to access a first-floor gallery in daylight. They cut through protective glass and escaped with invaluable jewels, including historic pieces that once belonged to Napoleon's family.
The discovery that the world's most prestigious museum, home to treasures like the Mona Lisa, relied on such an elementary password has left the public and cybersecurity experts stunned.
Social media erupted with reactions. One user posted, "If you feel like you're bad at your job and it's making you depressed, just consider that, as the investigation of the recent heist revealed, the password to access the Louvre's video surveillance system was 'Louvre'."
Another commentator noted, "If you ever have imposter syndrome, just remember that the security password for The Louvre was 'louvre'."
A supportive message read, "Next time you doubt your competence, remember even the Louvre protected priceless art with the password 'Louvre.' Sometimes the system, not the worker, is what's broken."
One user theorized about how this situation occurred: "At that moment when the technician had to pick a password and thought, 'I'll just set it to 'Louvre' for now, it's easy to remember. I'll tell them to change it later', he probably imagined they'd switch to something like 'Louvre123'. What he didn't expect was that they'd never change it at all."
The contrast between everyday password requirements and the museum's lax approach was highlighted: "Every website I've ever seen: password must be at least 15 characters long, contains a special character, doesn't contain your uncle's college roommate's name, and has the symbol of Ra. The Louvre: Louvre."
Another user commented, "I mean, in terms of lazy passwords that's right up there with having Password as your password. I bet they couldn't believe their luck. 'Hey try Louvre.' 'There's no way that will work, they aren't that stupid....oh turns out they are.'"
The disbelief continued with another post: "The entire Louvre security camera system was protected by the password 'Louvre'. This has to be a joke, right?"
Since the heist, authorities have apprehended several suspects, some with previous theft records. French investigators suspect the October 19 robbery might have been commissioned by a private collector seeking the valuable artifacts.
