Virginia's New Lieutenant Governor Is Deeply Attached To Hyderabad

Ghazala Hashmi has become the first Muslim and South Asian American to serve in the Virginia Senate, marking a historic achievement in American politics.

During a visit to Hyderabad a decade ago, Virginia's newly elected Lieutenant Governor Ghazala Hashmi demonstrated profound emotional ties to her birthplace, according to her cousin's account.

Hashmi's family relocated to the United States when she was just four years old in 1968, leaving behind their family home in the Malakpet neighborhood of Hyderabad, which has since been sold.

In an interview with PTI, Hashmi's cousin Rasia shared memories of how the politician explored numerous historical landmarks during her visit, including the iconic Charminar, the magnificent Chowmahalla Palace, and the renowned Salar Jung museum.

"What I can see is, she is deeply attached to Hyderabad. She was very emotional when she came here. She is deeply attached to her paternal and maternal family in Hyderabad. That's the reason she visited at that time, though she was busy then also," Rasia, who is Hashmi's first cousin, explained.

Rasia noted that Hashmi has always maintained a keen interest in the history of both India and Hyderabad specifically, which motivated her visits to cultural heritage sites like the Salar Jung museum and Chowmahalla Palace.

During her Hyderabad trip, Hashmi was accompanied by her elder daughter, and the family organized a special get-together to celebrate the reunion, recalled Rasia, who works as a journalist.

The cousin mentioned that Hashmi found traditional Hyderabadi cuisine quite spicy for her palate.

Rasia, who maintains regular contact with Hashmi, expressed that her election represents a moment of immense pride for Indians and particularly for people from Hyderabad.

Extending her good wishes to Hashmi in her new leadership role, Rasia expressed hope that her cousin would work diligently for the welfare of Virginia's residents and continue her commitment to humanitarian service.

Hashmi's election as Virginia's Lieutenant Governor represents a significant milestone as she becomes the first Muslim and South Asian American to attain this prestigious political position in the state.
