Apple Partners with Google to Power Siri with 1.2 Trillion-Parameter Gemini AI Model

Apple is finalizing a $1 billion annual deal with Google to use its advanced Gemini AI model to enhance Siri's capabilities. This temporary solution will help Apple compete with more sophisticated voice assistants from Amazon and Google while developing its own AI systems. The 1.2 trillion-parameter model represents a significant upgrade for Siri, which has historically struggled with complex requests and third-party app integration.

Apple To Use Google's Gemini Model To Run New Siri: Report

Siri has consistently demonstrated limited capabilities compared to competitors Alexa and Google Assistant when handling sophisticated, multi-step commands.

According to a Bloomberg News report released Wednesday, Apple intends to utilize a 1.2 trillion-parameter artificial intelligence model created by Google's parent company Alphabet to enhance its Siri voice assistant.

Following extensive evaluation, the companies are reportedly finalizing an agreement where Apple would pay approximately $1 billion annually for access to Google's advanced AI technology.

Bloomberg reports that the iPhone manufacturer plans to implement Google's Gemini model as an interim solution until Apple's proprietary systems reach maturity. The Gemini model's 1.2 trillion parameters, which measure AI complexity, significantly exceed the capabilities of Apple's current technology.

Historically, Siri has underperformed compared to competitors Alexa and Google Assistant in processing complex requests involving multiple steps and integrating with third-party applications.

Google declined to comment on the matter, while Apple did not immediately respond to Reuters' request for comment.

The reported agreement is distinct from previous discussions about directly integrating Gemini into Siri as a chatbot functionality. Importantly, this partnership will not incorporate Google AI search capabilities into Apple's operating systems.

In March, Apple announced that AI improvements to Siri would be delayed until 2026, without providing specific reasons for the postponement.

Competitors have rapidly incorporated AI features into their voice assistants, with Google adding its Gemini model to its assistant last year and Amazon implementing an AI-driven overhaul of Alexa earlier this year.

Bloomberg reported in March that Apple reorganized its executive leadership to revitalize its AI initiatives following months of delays, resulting in Mike Rockwell assuming leadership of Siri after CEO Tim Cook lost confidence in AI division head John Giannandrea's ability to execute product development effectively.
