France:
On Thursday, French police fatally shot a man armed with a machete near a school in the southeastern community of La Seyne-sur-Mer, as confirmed by prosecutors.
Public prosecutor Samuel Finielz stated that the "threatening" individual ignored police commands and approached the officers, who initially deployed an electroshock device before firing six shots at the man.
Finielz explained that officers targeted the man's lower body, but he succumbed to his injuries at the location.
A police source indicated that the confrontation happened shortly before 5:00 pm near a nursery school.
"It seems that the children were threatened," stated Finielz, while confirming that no one was injured in the incident.
Officers responding to the scene observed the man carrying what appeared to be a machete "with a blade measuring several dozen centimeters in length," the prosecutor noted.
They instructed him "to place his weapon on the ground, which he refused to do," Finielz added.
The incident coincided with demonstrations across France, where hundreds of thousands of citizens protested against the government's austerity measures.
French authorities have faced increasing pressure to address crime near educational institutions following multiple knife attacks targeting teachers and students in recent years.
