New York City has elected Zohran Mamdani as its first Indian-American Muslim mayor, making history as the youngest person ever to lead the city. A pre-election poll suggested that nearly 3 million residents might consider leaving following his victory, with his wealth taxation policies generating concern among high-income earners. Despite opposition from President Trump, the 34-year-old Democrat socialist defeated former Governor Andrew Cuomo and will take office in January 2026.

Mamdani Wins New York Polls, Will Millions Leave City As They Had Claimed?

New York City has elected Democrat socialist Zohran Mamdani as its new mayor, making history as he becomes the first Indian-American Muslim and youngest person ever to lead the metropolis. His victory comes despite vocal opposition from US President Donald Trump.

Prior to the election, a JL Partners survey revealed concerning statistics about potential population shifts. According to the poll, approximately 9 percent of New York's residents—around 765,000 people—indicated they would "definitely" relocate if Mamdani won. An additional 25 percent (roughly 2.12 million people) stated they would "consider" leaving the city.

The 34-year-old mayor-elect's campaign platform focused heavily on taxing wealthy residents, which appears to have generated anxiety among high-income earners. This concern was particularly pronounced among voters between 50 and 64 years old, a demographic that controls approximately 12 percent of the city's wealth.

The survey highlighted several demographic trends regarding potential exodus. Men expressed stronger intentions to leave than women, with 12 percent of male respondents stating they would definitely relocate compared to 7 percent of women. Approximately one-fourth of both genders were contemplating such a move.

Age also factored significantly into relocation considerations. The 50-64 age bracket showed the highest propensity to leave, with 12 percent firmly decided and 33 percent actively considering relocation.

Ethnically, White and Asian residents demonstrated greater concern about Mamdani's leadership, with 13 percent and 11 percent respectively confirming definite plans to move. Geographically, Staten Island residents expressed the strongest likelihood of departure, with 21 percent certain about leaving and 54 percent considering it.

Zohran Mamdani, currently serving as a state assemblyman from Queens, has been elected as New York City's 111th mayor after defeating former Governor Andrew Cuomo. He will officially assume office on January 1, 2026, replacing incumbent Eric Adams.

During his victory speech, the mayor-elect drew inspiration from India's first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru's famous "Tryst with Destiny" address. "Standing before you, I think of the words of Jawaharlal Nehru. A moment comes but rarely in history, when we step out from the old to the new, when an age ends and when the soul of a nation long suppressed finds utterance. Tonight, we have stepped out from the old into the new," Mamdani declared.
