During a joint press conference with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, US President Donald Trump recommended that Britain consider military involvement to address its migrant crisis.
United Kingdom:
While concluding his state visit to Britain on Thursday, US President Donald Trump proposed that the UK might need to deploy military resources to handle the ongoing small boats migrant situation.
Trump reflected on his own country's experience, stating, "There were millions of people flowing into our country previously. I found it unbearable to witness. I believe your circumstances are quite comparable. You have individuals entering illegally, and I informed the prime minister that I would halt it, regardless of whether military deployment is necessary or whatever methods are required."
The remarks came during a news conference where Trump appeared alongside British Prime Minister Keir Starmer as they wrapped up Trump's official state visit.
"Irregular migration destroys nations from within, and we're currently in the process of removing many who entered our country unlawfully," Trump added.
His comments coincided with Starmer's announcement that the UK needed to "intensify" deportations of irregular migrants back to France, following the first such removal under a newly established agreement earlier that day.
"We need to expand this operation significantly, which was always the intention under this framework, but it's crucial that we've been able to demonstrate the concept works," Starmer explained to journalists at the press conference.
In recent years, tens of thousands of migrants have reached southeastern England annually after making dangerous Channel crossings from northern France using small vessels.
