As Zohran Mamdani secured his groundbreaking victory as New York City's mayor, his wife Rama Duwaji was the influential force working diligently behind the scenes. This 28-year-old talented artist strategically avoided the limelight while significantly contributing to the Democratic socialist's distinctive campaign identity and digital presence, yet remained virtually unseen throughout the campaign trail.
According to CNN reporting, Duwaji, a Syrian-American who grew up in Dallas and received her education in Dubai before relocating to New York just four years ago, was instrumental in crafting Mamdani's campaign branding. She designed the logos and established the vibrant yellow, orange and blue visual identity that became emblematic of his grassroots movement.
Despite her crucial role, Duwaji maintained a notably low profile, abstaining from debates and campaign events prior to election day. Her social media remained largely silent about the mayoral race, with her single election-related Instagram post appearing in June following Mamdani's unexpected primary victory, simply stating: "Couldn't possibly be prouder."
Duwaji accompanied Mamdani when he cast his primary vote on Tuesday and later joined him during his appearance on The Daily Show. CNN reported she was also spotted among the crowd of over 10,000 supporters at Queens' Forest Hills Stadium, watching as Mamdani delivered his final campaign speech alongside Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Senator Bernie Sanders.
The couple's relationship began on the dating app Hinge in 2021, shortly after Mamdani was elected to the New York State Assembly. Their first date took place at Qahwah House, a Yemeni café in Brooklyn, followed by a stroll through McCarren Park. On their second date, he showed her his Queens neighborhood.
Their engagement came in October 2024, just days before Mamdani announced his mayoral campaign. After celebration in Dubai last December, they wed in a modest courthouse ceremony in Lower Manhattan in February, taking photos on the marriage bureau's distinctive green couches.
Duwaji's social media showcases her ceramic works and illustrations, including several pieces expressing solidarity with Palestine. Her growing public profile has caught the attention of friends, with Hasnain Bhatti telling The New York Times last month, "She's our modern-day Princess Diana."
