Mamdani Sets Sights On Trump, Says New York Victory Shows Way To Defeat Him

Democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani celebrated his groundbreaking victory in New York's mayoral election amid enthusiastic supporter applause. He expressed gratitude to New Yorkers for electing him as the first Indian-American Muslim and youngest mayor in the city's history.

"Thank you to the new generation of New York. We'll fight for you because we are you. The future is in our hands. My friends, we have toppled a political dynasty," Mamdani declared to the crowd.

In his victory speech spanning just under 30 minutes, Mamdani directly addressed President Donald Trump, saying, "Donald Trump, since I know you're watching, I have four words for you: turn the volume up."

He continued with conviction, "To get to any of us, you will have to get through all of us... If anyone can show a nation betrayed by Donald Trump how to defeat him, it is the city that gave rise to him... I will put an end to the culture of corruption that has allowed billionaires like Trump to evade taxation and exploit tax breaks."

As Mamdani spoke about him, Trump responded on Truth Social with the ominous message, "...AND SO IT BEGINS!"

The 34-year-old lawmaker acknowledged his main opponent, Andrew Cuomo, wishing him "the best in private life" before adding, "But let tonight be the last time I utter his name, as we abandon a politics that answers to the few."

Mamdani thanked New Yorkers for delivering "a mandate for change, a mandate for a new kind of politics, a mandate for a city that we can afford." He affirmed, "On January 1, I will be sworn in as mayor of New York City."

"New York will remain a city of immigrants. A city built by immigrants, powered by immigrants and, as of tonight, led by an immigrant. We'll love everyone, whether you are an immigrant or not," he promised.

In a powerful moment, the Indian-origin politician quoted Jawaharlal Nehru's famous "Tryst with Destiny" speech: "A moment comes rarely in history when we step out from the old to the new, when an age ends, and when the soul of a nation, long suppressed, finds utterance."

Mamdani emphasized that his victory belonged to all New Yorkers, from taxi drivers to line cooks. He shared a personal story about participating in a 15-day hunger strike outside City Hall alongside a taxi driver named Richard, telling him, "My brother, we are in City Hall now."

He recounted conversations with various working-class New Yorkers, from bodega owners to nurses, affirming that his campaign aimed to represent them. "This city is your city, and this democracy is yours too," he declared.

Mamdani reaffirmed his campaign pledges for free public transportation, universal childcare, and addressing rising rent prices to improve affordability. He told supporters, "In this moment of darkness, New York will be the light."

He committed to representing all New Yorkers, including those who didn't vote for him. In an emotional moment, he thanked his parents while embracing his identity: "To my mama and baba, I am so proud to be your son... I am young, and I am a Muslim. I refuse to apologize for being a Muslim."

Mamdani is the son of Ugandan academic Mahmood Mamdani and renowned Indian filmmaker Mira Nair.
