Kyiv Says Russia Returned 1,000 Bodies To Ukraine
Ukraine:
On Thursday, Ukraine received 1,000 bodies from Russia that were reportedly those of fallen Ukrainian military personnel, according to an announcement from a Kyiv government agency.
"Today, repatriation procedures were carried out. Ukraine has received 1,000 bodies that the Russian side claims belong to Ukrainian servicemen," Ukraine's Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War stated on Telegram.
In exchange, Ukraine returned the remains of 24 Russian soldiers, according to another government entity responsible for providing information on Russian prisoners of war and missing Russian military personnel.
The repatriation of soldiers' remains and prisoner exchanges represent some of the only collaborative efforts between Ukraine and Russia during the ongoing conflict.
Since Russia's 2022 invasion, the death toll has reached tens of thousands of soldiers on both sides, though neither country regularly discloses information about their own casualties.
According to Ukraine's "I Want to Find" project, the International Committee of the Red Cross facilitated the exchange of bodies.
Despite US-led diplomatic initiatives aimed at ending the conflict and three rounds of direct negotiations between Kyiv and Moscow, efforts to halt the fighting appear to have reached an impasse.
The Kremlin announced last week that peace talks between Russia and Ukraine were currently "on pause".
