Democratic Socialist Zohran Mamdani stands poised to potentially become New York City's next mayor as voting concludes on Tuesday, November 4. The 34-year-old candidate faces competition from independent Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa in this pivotal election.
Born on October 18, 1991, in Kampala, Uganda, Zohran Kwame Mamdani comes from a distinguished lineage. His father is renowned Ugandan academic Mahmood Mamdani, while his mother is celebrated Indian filmmaker Mira Nair, establishing his unique connection to India.
Mamdani's formative years spanned multiple continents, taking him from Uganda to South Africa before settling in New York City. His education included the Bank Street School for Children and the prestigious Bronx High School of Science. In 2014, he graduated from Bowdoin College with an Africana Studies degree, where he demonstrated his political activism by co-founding a Students for Justice in Palestine chapter.
His professional journey began as a foreclosure prevention counsellor before he ventured into political volunteering. After joining the Democratic Socialists of America in 2017, Mamdani achieved political success in 2020 by winning the Democratic primary for Queens' 36th District in the New York State Assembly. He secured re-election unopposed in both 2022 and 2024, sponsoring 20 bills with three successfully enacted into law.
Beyond politics, Mamdani maintains a creative identity as a hip-hop artist performing under the names "Young Cardamom" and "Mr Cardamom." His artistic accomplishments include co-writing "#1 Spice" for Disney's 2016 film "Queen of Katwe" and releasing "Nani" in 2019, a heartfelt tribute to his grandmother featuring acclaimed actress Madhur Jaffrey.
Mamdani became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 2018 and married Syrian-American artist Rama Duwaji in 2025.
His mayoral campaign emphasizes affordable living through comprehensive policies including a rent freeze on stabilized units, construction of 200,000 public housing units, universal childcare, tuition-free education, fare-free buses, and city-operated grocery stores.
Mamdani's economic vision includes raising the minimum wage to $30 hourly by 2030, funded by increased taxes on wealthy individuals and corporations. He advocates reallocating police resources toward community services and expanding public transportation and cycling infrastructure.
If successful, Mamdani would make history as New York City's first Muslim mayor.
