Government Shutdown Crisis: Democrats Accuse Trump of Weaponizing Hunger as SNAP Benefits Disrupted

The five-week government shutdown has disrupted critical SNAP food benefits for over 42 million Americans, with House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries accusing President Trump and Republicans of "weaponizing hunger." Democrats demand Obamacare subsidy extensions in any funding deal, while Republicans seek a straightforward funding resolution, creating a political stalemate with no immediate resolution in sight.

Trump Seeks To 'Weaponise Hunger' In Shutdown: Top Democrat

The US government has remained closed for five weeks now, creating significant disruptions across the nation.

United States:

A senior Democratic congressional leader has accused President Donald Trump and Republican lawmakers of deliberately "weaponizing hunger" as the extended government shutdown continues to interrupt essential food assistance for millions of vulnerable Americans.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries stated that Republicans have demonstrated they are "unserious" about ending the five-week government shutdown, which has caused billions in economic damage and sparked fierce accusations from across the political spectrum.

Jeffries criticized Trump's Republicans—many of whom have been absent from Washington while Republican leadership keeps the House of Representatives inactive—for creating a crisis that includes the interruption of funding for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), which provides critical food support to over 42 million Americans.

"We want to reopen the government, we want to enact a bipartisan spending agreement that actually makes life better for everyday Americans," Jeffries explained during an appearance on CNN's "State of the Union."

"It's very unfortunate that Donald Trump and Republicans have decided to weaponize hunger and withhold SNAP benefits, even in contravention of two federal courts which have made clear that not a single person in this country should go without their nutritional assistance."

A federal judge recently mandated that the government utilize emergency funds to ensure SNAP's continuity. President Trump indicated willingness to comply but claimed he needed additional clarification regarding how his administration could legally implement that directive.

Jeffries expressed frustration over the suspension of SNAP funding, a program that had operated without interruption for 60 years until this shutdown.

"Donald Trump and his administration are finding funding for other projects, but somehow they can't find money to make sure that Americans don't go hungry," he remarked.

Republicans have advocated for a straightforward extension of federal funding through a short-term continuing resolution lasting until November 21 or later, to restore government operations and initiate negotiations for a long-term solution.

However, Democrats have resisted this approach, insisting that any federal funding plan must include an extension of enhanced Obamacare health insurance subsidies, which will expire at year's end without congressional action.

If these subsidies expire, "we know that tens of millions of Americans are about to experience dramatically increased premiums, co-pays and deductibles," Jeffries warned.

With no resolution to the stalemate in sight, and Trump refusing to meet with congressional Democrats unless the government reopens first, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt accused Democrats of attempting to "renegotiate the entire health care system."

"That's why they're holding the government hostage," Leavitt told Fox News show "Sunday Morning Futures."

"They want to add $1.7 trillion of new spending, and again, give taxpayer funded Medicaid to illegal aliens. That is a red line in the sand for President Trump and Republicans," she asserted.

It is important to note that undocumented immigrants in the United States are not eligible for Medicaid, the federal health coverage program for low-income Americans, or for SNAP benefits.
