Ten people sustained injuries during a mass stabbing incident on a London-bound train Saturday evening, with authorities taking two suspects into custody. Nine of the victims have sustained life-threatening injuries.
The British Transport Police confirmed the incident occurred on a train traveling from Doncaster in the northeast to London's King's Cross Station, a heavily frequented route. The attack took place shortly after the train departed from Peterborough station at approximately 7:30 pm local time.
British authorities announced Sunday that two British nationals were arrested on suspicion of attempted murder following the incident. British Transport Police (BTP) Superintendent John Loveless informed reporters that investigators are not treating the attack as a "terrorist incident" at this stage.
The detained individuals were identified as a 32-year-old Black British national and a 35-year-old British national of Caribbean descent. BTP officials emphasized that following the arrests, they have "nothing to suggest that this is a terrorist incident."
One eyewitness described observing an assailant wielding a large knife and reported that "blood was everywhere." Speaking to The Times, the witness recounted how passengers sought refuge in lavatories, while others were trampled as people attempted to flee.
"I heard some people shouting, 'We love you'," the eyewitness added.
Another witness told Sky News that he observed a victim moving through the carriage saying, "They have got a knife; I have been stabbed."
A third witness informed the BBC that he initially heard people shouting, "run, run, there's a guy literally stabbing everyone." The individual initially dismissed it as a possible post-Halloween prank.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer characterized Saturday's mass stabbing as an "appalling incident."
"My thoughts are with all those affected, and my thanks go to the emergency services for their response," Starmer stated in a post on X. "Anyone in the area should follow the advice of the police," he added.
