A catastrophic landslide triggered by heavy rainfall in western Kenya has claimed at least 21 lives, with over 30 individuals still unaccounted for, according to the interior minister's statement.

The disaster struck overnight in Marakwet East, located in the western part of Kenya, which is currently experiencing its rainy season.

"We have confirmed the loss of 21 people to this tragedy, while over 30 people are still unaccounted for as reported by their families," Kipchumba Murkomen announced on the social media platform X.

Search and rescue operations have been temporarily suspended for the night, he further stated.

The Kenyan Red Cross has released aerial photographs of the region displaying massive mudslides and flash flooding covering extensive areas.

The humanitarian organization reported that it is working in conjunction with the government to coordinate rescue efforts, including airlifting injured survivors.
