Rob Jetten, leader of the Dutch centrist D66 party, is poised to make historical waves across the Netherlands political landscape.

At just 38 years old, Jetten stands to become both the youngest prime minister and first openly gay leader in Dutch history following his party's remarkable performance in the October 29 election.

"I feel incredibly elated that we've emerged as the dominant party in this election," Jetten shared with journalists. "This represents a historic achievement for D66. Simultaneously, I recognize the tremendous responsibility that comes with this position."

Despite a closely contested race, Jetten declared victory over Geert Wilders, the anti-Islam populist known for promoting anti-immigration policies and advocating for a Quran ban. Reports indicate Wilders' support base significantly diminished compared to previous electoral results.

Official confirmation of results is scheduled for Monday, November 3, after overseas mail-in ballots are tallied and incorporated into the final count.

In an impressive political ascension, Jetten has elevated his party from fifth position to the forefront of Dutch politics in under two years. Drawing inspiration from Barack Obama's iconic phrase, Jetten campaigned with the optimistic slogan "Het kan wel" ("Yes, it's possible"), while criticizing Wilders for "creating division" within society.

"I believe we've demonstrated to Europe and the global community that defeating populist movements is achievable through positive campaigning for your nation," he stated.

"Our campaign strategy emphasized positivity because we aim to eliminate the negativity that has permeated the Netherlands in recent years," he explained to AFP.

"My goal is to reposition the Netherlands at Europe's core because without European collaboration, we stand isolated," he added.

Hailing from Uden, a southeastern Dutch town, Jetten pursued public administration studies at Radboud University in Nijmegen. During his youth, he was passionate about football and athletics. Both his parents worked as educators.

"I aspired to make the world slightly better," he told his university's website.

While initially considering careers in professional sports and later the restaurant industry, his path took an unexpected turn. "My ideal was owning a restaurant on a beach in a warm country, but life unfolded differently," he reflected. "Not that I have any regrets—I now hold the most wonderful position in the Netherlands."

On a personal note, Jetten is engaged to Argentine hockey player Nicolas Keenan, with wedding plans set for Spain next year.
