US President Donald Trump declared victory Wednesday regarding what he described as the "hoax" of climate change, following billionaire philanthropist Bill Gates' statement that global warming would not spell the end of civilization.

"I (WE!) just won the War on the Climate Change Hoax. Bill Gates has finally admitted that he was completely WRONG on the issue," Trump posted on his Truth Social platform.

"It took courage to do so, and for that we are all grateful."

The Microsoft co-founder Gates stated in a comprehensive memo this week that climate change "will not lead to humanity's demise," marking what many view as a significant shift in position by the 70-year-old.

Gates further noted that while climate change would have "serious" consequences, "people will be able to live and thrive in most places on Earth for the foreseeable future."

He suggested that addressing global disease and poverty would better prepare the planet's most vulnerable populations for a warming world.

Gates acknowledged potential criticism of hypocrisy due to his substantial carbon footprint or claims that his memo was a "sneaky way of arguing that we shouldn't take climate change seriously."

However, he highlighted significant progress in emissions reduction thus far and expressed optimism about future technological advancements further reducing emissions.

Trump has consistently expressed skepticism on environmental matters and dismissed climate change as the "greatest con job ever" during his address to the UN General Assembly in September.

The Republican has reversed numerous green policies since returning to office in January, following a successful 2024 election campaign that received hundreds of millions of dollars in donations from the oil industry.
