India Challenges "Biased" Myanmar Human Rights Report at UN General Assembly Session

At the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly, India strongly criticized what it described as "baseless and biased" statements in a recent report regarding the human rights situation in Myanmar, while simultaneously reaffirming its dedication to global peace, stability, and disarmament efforts.

The Indian Parliamentary Delegation, under the leadership of Lok Sabha MP Dr. D. Purandeswari, took part in the opening ceremonies and paid homage to Mahatma Gandhi by placing floral tributes at his bust in the UN Headquarters located in New York.

During a joint briefing by special mandate holders on Myanmar's human rights conditions, MP Dilip Saikia emphasized India's continued support for peace-building initiatives through a process that should be "Myanmar-owned and Myanmar-led." He stressed that lasting stability can only be achieved through inclusive political dialogue and by swiftly resuming democratic processes via credible elections with broad participation.

Saikia also drew attention to India's ongoing humanitarian assistance to Myanmar, specifically mentioning people-centered initiatives like Operation Brahma and Operation Sadbhav, which were implemented to provide critical assistance during natural disasters.

Taking issue with certain aspects of a recent report concerning India, Saikia objected to observations that linked the April 2025 terrorist incident in Pahalgam to displaced individuals from Myanmar, calling these connections "baseless and biased." He advised the Special Rapporteur against relying on unverified or skewed media reports that appeared designed to tarnish India's international reputation.

In a different session focused on "Disarmament Machinery," MP Sajda Ahmed highlighted India's unwavering commitment to multilateralism and to upholding the principles outlined in the UN Charter. She reiterated India's stance that the Conference on Disarmament remains the only legitimate multilateral forum for negotiating global disarmament matters.

Despite the challenging global security landscape, Ahmed expressed optimism that the forum's work would produce collective and pragmatic solutions, adding that India stands prepared to work collaboratively with other Member States to achieve common objectives.
