Trump Hints at Possibility of Third Presidential Term Despite Constitutional Limits

President Donald Trump has suggested openness to a third presidential term in 2028 despite constitutional restrictions, while also naming potential Republican successors including Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Vice President JD Vance. Trump made these comments during his ongoing Asia tour, which includes successful diplomatic engagements in Malaysia before continuing to Japan.

When questioned about former White House strategist Steve Bannon's recent suggestion that he pursue an unconstitutional third term, Trump, during his media interaction aboard Air Force One, stated, "I would love to do it. I have the best numbers ever."

However, he promptly clarified that he "hasn't really thought about" running again.

Trump also indicated potential successors to lead the Republican Party after his presidency, identifying Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Vice President JD Vance as leading candidates for the 2028 presidential race.

"We have some really good people," Trump remarked, gesturing toward Rubio, "We have great people -- I don't need to get into that. One of them is standing right here," he further noted.

The President additionally commended his vice president, JD Vance, "Obviously, JD is great. The vice president is great. I'm not sure anyone would run against those two," Trump commented.

According to Politico, Bannon, a close associate of the former president, has been among the most outspoken supporters for Trump to consider another campaign, recently asserting on his podcast that "there is a plan" for Trump to pursue a third term. However, the US Constitution restricts a president to two terms.

Meanwhile, Trump has arrived in Tokyo for the second phase of his Asia tour, following a productive visit to Malaysia, where he took part in the ASEAN Summit.

Before departing from Kuala Lumpur, Trump bid farewell to Malaysian officials and citizens, concluding his 24-hour visit.

On Truth Social, he posted, "Just leaving Malaysia, a great and very vibrant Country. Signed major Trade and Rare Earth Deals, and yesterday, most importantly, signed the Peace Treaty between Thailand and Cambodia. NO WAR! Millions of lives saved. Such an honor to have gotten this done. Now, off to Japan!!!".
