3 Police Officers Killed, 2 Injured In US' Pennsylvania Shooting, Suspect Dead

At least two people were seriously injured in a shooting involving police in the southern part of Pennsylvania on Wednesday, and Gov. Josh Shapiro was rushing to the scene, officials said.

An investigation is underway in North Codorus Township, approximately 185 km west of Philadelphia.

Three police officers were killed and two were injured in a shooting incident Wednesday in southern Pennsylvania. The shooter was subsequently killed by police forces, according to authorities.

The officers were following up on a domestic-related investigation that had begun the previous day.

"We mourn the loss of three precious souls who dedicated their service to this county, commonwealth, and country," stated Governor Josh Shapiro.

"This type of violence is unacceptable; we must improve as a society," he added.

The shooting occurred near North Codorus Township, about 115 miles (185 km) west of Philadelphia and close to the Maryland border, authorities reported.

"The grief will be unbearable, but we will endure it," said Pennsylvania State Police Commissioner Christopher Paris at a news conference. "We will conduct a thorough, fair, and competent investigation into this matter."

York Hospital confirmed it was treating two individuals in serious condition and had implemented enhanced security protocols.

Authorities have not disclosed the identities of the shooter or the officers, nor which police department they served with, or the specific circumstances of the shooting. Police were unable to share many details due to the ongoing investigation, according to Paris.

Attorney General Pamela Bondi described violence against police as "a scourge on our society." She mentioned that federal agents were supporting local officers at the scene.

"Please send prayers to the officers and those involved in the shooting in York County," Pennsylvania Lt. Gov. Austin Davis posted on social media.

A nearby school district temporarily implemented a shelter-in-place order as a precaution, though it clarified that schools and students were not involved in the incident. The order was later lifted. The district explained that authorities "advised us to hold students and staff in our buildings as a precaution while several area roads are closed."

The medical response took place on a rural road in south-central Pennsylvania that winds through farmland with barns and agricultural fields.

Law enforcement kept people away from the scene in the rolling farmland area, with approximately 30 police vehicles blocking roads bordered by a barn, a goat farm, and soybean and corn fields.

"Pennsylvania State Police, Northern Regional Police, and numerous emergency responders are at the scene. The York County Commissioners are closely monitoring the situation and praying for all those involved," the county stated.

In February, an officer in the area was killed when an armed individual with a pistol and zip ties entered a hospital's intensive care unit and took staff hostage before a shootout that resulted in the deaths of both the suspect and an officer.
