Nepal PM Expands Cabinet, Appoints Two Youth Icons As Ministers

Nepal Prime Minister Sushila Karki has expanded her interim cabinet on Sunday, bringing in two ministers who are widely popular among the youth demographic.

The 73-year-old former chief justice assumed leadership following nationwide protests in September that dramatically changed Nepal's political landscape.

President Ram Chandra Paudel officially swore in Youth and Sports Minister Bablu Gupta and Health and Population Minister Sudha Sharma, according to officials.

Gupta, 28, has established himself as a prominent figure through his work with the volunteer organization "100's Group," which delivers essential support to underprivileged communities via food distribution and educational initiatives.

Sharma, who combines her medical career with authorship, is recognized for her significant contributions to maternal and child health policy development in Nepal.

Both ministers were supporters of the youth-led demonstrations that swept across the country last month.

The September protests initially began as a response to a temporary social media ban but quickly evolved into broader expressions of public frustration over economic challenges and perceived governmental corruption.

The resulting violence claimed at least 73 lives and led to extensive damage to government institutions, including parliament buildings, courts, and administrative offices.

Ram Rawal, Karki's press coordinator, revealed to AFP that the Prime Minister had proposed two additional cabinet members, but these appointments remain pending while consultations continue.

A source from the presidential office confirmed that cabinet expansion discussions are ongoing with youth representatives, indicating that the process remains incomplete.

Karki's interim government is tasked with guiding the Himalayan nation until scheduled elections on March 5. She has committed to restoring order and addressing widespread demands for transparent governance in the country of 30 million citizens.
