A tragic shooting occurred at a large weekend gathering in southeastern North Carolina, resulting in two fatalities and leaving several others critically wounded, according to the sheriff's statement on Saturday.

The office of Robeson County Sheriff Burnis Wilkins confirmed in an official news release that a total of 13 people were shot. Early Saturday, the sheriff mentioned that homicide investigators and additional personnel were dispatched to the party location in a rural area outside Maxton, approximately 150 kilometers southwest of Raleigh near the South Carolina state line.

"This appears to have been an isolated incident, and there is no current threat to the community," the statement indicated.

According to the sheriff's office, more than 150 attendees fled the scene before law enforcement arrived. Authorities are urging anyone with information about the incident or who was present at the location to contact sheriff's investigators.

Additional details about the shooting, including the identities of the deceased and injured victims, were not immediately disclosed on Saturday. No arrests had been announced at that time.
