Kathakali Performance Brings Mahabharata Epic to Life in South Korea's Cultural Exchange Festival

India's classical Kathakali dance form made its debut in Miryang, South Korea, showcasing the Mahabharata epic during the 11th annual Sarang Festival. This cultural exchange event featured elaborate performances at multiple venues including Yoga Culture Town and Busan Citizens Hall, strengthening diplomatic ties between the two nations through artistic expression.

The cultural event took place at Nami Island, one of South Korea's premier tourist attractions.

Marking a significant milestone in India-South Korea cultural relations, the northeastern city of Miryang in Gyeongsangnam-do Province hosted an exceptional Kathakali performance on Thursday, introducing this iconic Indian classical dance form to local audiences.

"Miryang welcomed the timeless beauty of Kathakali for the first time at Yoga Culture Town on October 23. This vibrant spectacle of storytelling, rhythm, and expression - one of India's most celebrated classical dance forms - brought the ancient Mahabharata epic to life through expressive dance and music," shared The Embassy of India in South Korea via their X platform.

The Embassy expressed gratitude to Miryang City and Yoga Culture Town for hosting this pioneering cultural event.

Previously, the Indian Embassy inaugurated the 11th annual Sarang Festival - The Festival of India in the Republic of Korea, featuring a mesmerizing Kathakali performance distinguished by its elaborate costumes, vibrant makeup, and expressive gestures.

Ambassador-designate Gourangalal Das honored the Kathakali troupe, which captivated the audience with a one-hour performance of Duryodhanavadham from the Mahabharata. Deputy Chief of Mission Nishi Kant Singh and Seodaemun-gu Mayor Lee Sung-heon delivered welcome remarks. The acclaimed artist Sreenathan Sreenatha Mandiram led the Kathakali ensemble.

The Sarang festival showcases various aspects of India's rich cultural heritage, including classical dance performances, music, films, art exhibitions, and culinary experiences. Approximately 400 guests attended, representing Korea's diplomatic corps, media, cultural figures, and friends of India.

On Wednesday, the Kathakali group delivered another performance at Busan Citizens Hall.

"The splendour of Kathakali merged with the vitality of Chhau dance at Busan Citizens Hall on October 22. Through every gesture and rhythm, India's spirit connected with Korea's warmth - celebrating friendship through artistic expression. Special thanks to Busan University of Foreign Studies (BUFS) for collaborating with the Indian Embassy to create this memorable evening of cultural harmony," the Embassy stated on X.

During the Sarang Festival, audiences enthusiastically engaged with India's rhythms through compelling Kathakali performances and demonstrations of traditional Indian musical instruments.

The festival was hosted at Nami Island, one of South Korea's most popular tourist destinations.
