Luigi Mangione Was Attacked By Transgenders In Thailand Days Before Shooting: Report

Luigi Mangione is scheduled to appear in federal court again on December 5.
Luigi Mangione, the 27-year-old man facing charges for the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, allegedly experienced an assault by a group of transgender women during a night out in Thailand months before the shooting incident.
According to a report by The New York Times, Mangione sent a message claiming he was attacked by seven transgender women, known locally as "ladyboys," during his Thailand trip. The publication also obtained a photograph showing his arm appearing battered and scratched from the alleged incident.
The Ivy League-educated tech expert was traveling solo in Thailand in early 2024 when he met Christian Sacchini, a soccer player, at a Bangkok pub. Their initial conversation was casual, with Mangione discussing video games and Pokemon.
However, Sacchini told The New York Post that the conversation later shifted to a critique of the American healthcare system, which Mangione allegedly described as "effed up." Sacchini recalled that Mangione was particularly shocked by the low cost of medical procedures like MRI scans in Thailand compared to the United States.
Prior to the shooting, Mangione had left his life in Hawaii to "zen out" on a solo journey across Asia, as indicated by an audio message he shared with a friend he met while traveling.
In an August 2024 diary entry, Mangione wrote: "I finally feel confident about what I'll do. The details are finally coming together. And I don't feel any doubt about whether it's right or justified."
He also expressed satisfaction with delaying his plan, noting it had given him more time to research UnitedHealthcare: "I'm glad in a way that I've procrastinated, bc it allowed me to learn more about UHC. The target is insurance. It checks every box."
Mangione has entered a plea of not guilty to both federal and state charges related to Thompson's shooting. After the incident, he fled and was apprehended in Pennsylvania five days later. Federal prosecutors are pursuing the death penalty in his case.
His next federal court appearance is scheduled for December 5.
