Social media videos have popularized dangerous methods for eliminating cockroaches.
A shocking incident in South Korea has captured nationwide attention after a woman unintentionally caused a deadly apartment fire while attempting to kill a cockroach. The blaze, which erupted in Osan city, claimed the life of a neighbor and injured several others. According to BBC reports, the woman in her twenties created an improvised flamethrower using a lighter and flammable spray to incinerate the insect. Unfortunately, the flames rapidly spread to nearby household items, igniting a fire that consumed her apartment and extended throughout the building.
In a heartbreaking turn of events, a Chinese woman in her thirties residing on the fifth floor with her husband and two-month-old infant lost her life. As fire and dense smoke blocked normal exits, the desperate couple passed their baby through a window to a neighbor in the adjacent building.
While the husband successfully crossed to safety, his wife tragically fell during her escape attempt. She was immediately transported to hospital but succumbed to her injuries hours later.
The building, which features commercial establishments on the ground level and over 30 residential units above, saw multiple residents affected by the disaster. At least eight individuals suffered smoke inhalation injuries. Law enforcement officials have indicated their intention to request an arrest warrant for the woman responsible, citing charges of negligent homicide and arson.
This incident is not without precedent. Social media platforms have increasingly showcased extreme cockroach elimination techniques, including the use of blowtorches or homemade flamethrowers. However, these methods pose significant dangers, as evidenced by numerous incidents where individuals have triggered fires or explosions while attempting to exterminate cockroaches.
In 2018, an Australian resident set his kitchen ablaze using a homemade flamethrower. Similarly, in 2023, a Japanese man accidentally caused an explosion in his apartment while trying to eliminate a cockroach with excessive insecticide. This incident occurred when the 54-year-old spotted the insect in his Kumamoto apartment. Repulsed by the sight, he sprayed a substantial amount of insecticide to kill it.
Approximately one minute later, an explosion occurred, shattering a balcony window. Police reported that the resident sustained a minor injury from the blast.
