White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt delivered a sharp rebuke to a Huffington Post reporter, stating that SV Date is "not a journalist interested in the facts."
In Washington DC, tensions flared when Leavitt responded bluntly to a reporter's inquiry with a dismissive "Your mom did" comment regarding a potential meeting between President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss ending the Ukraine war.
Leavitt didn't hesitate to make the exchange public, sharing a screenshot of their text conversation on social media and labeling the journalist as a "left-wing hack" who regularly "bombards" her phone with what she describes as "Democrat talking points."
Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Leavitt elaborated: "For context, S.V. Date of the Huffington Post is not a journalist interested in the facts. He is a left-wing hack who has consistently attacked President Trump for years and constantly bombards my phone with Democrat talking points. Just take a look at SV Date's feed, it reads like an anti-Trump personal diary. Here is my full response to his 'inquiry.' Activists who masquerade as real reporters do a disservice to the profession."
The potential Trump-Putin summit, expected to take place in Budapest, Hungary in the coming weeks, has not yet been assigned a definitive date according to reports from Al Jazeera.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has expressed willingness to participate in the summit between Trump and Putin if invited. However, Zelenskyy indicated concerns about the Budapest location, given Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban's warm relationship with Moscow and strained ties with Kyiv.
"If I am invited to Budapest - if it is an invitation in a format where we meet as three or, as it's called, shuttle diplomacy, President Trump meets with Putin and President Trump meets with me - then in one format or another, we will agree," Zelenskyy stated to reporters on Monday.
Trump continues advocating for a resolution to the conflict that began with Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
Zelenskyy cautioned against repeating a "Budapest scenario" – referencing the 1994 Budapest Memorandum where Moscow and other powers provided security assurances to Ukraine and other former Soviet states in exchange for relinquishing nuclear arsenals inherited from Soviet times.
