Distinguished Indian politician and former UN diplomat Dr. Shashi Tharoor recently visited the BAPS Hindu Mandir in Abu Dhabi, describing it as an "extraordinary experience" and a "remarkable structure" that extends beyond its spiritual importance.
Tharoor acknowledged Prime Minister Narendra Modi's crucial contribution in establishing the BAPS Hindu Mandir, highlighting how Modi's diplomatic engagement with UAE authorities helped transform this ambitious vision into reality, fulfilling the long-held aspirations of the Hindu community in the region.
Situated 90 miles from Dubai and 60 miles from the UAE capital, this architectural masterpiece in the desert made a profound impression on Tharoor, who documented his experience in a video shared on his X platform, accompanied by the temple's head, Swami Brahma Vihari Das.
Tharoor expressed admiration for the temple's intricate architectural elements, from the symbolic Wall of Harmony at its entrance to the innovative heat-resistant tiles that maintain comfortable temperatures for visitors even in extreme 50-degree heat.
The meticulously handcrafted sandstone carvings and elaborate statues representing seven major deities with individual shrines demonstrate exceptional craftsmanship. Tharoor was particularly impressed by the dust-free columns, achieved through thoughtfully designed surrounding structures that protect the complex from desert sand.
The Abhishek Mandapam and tributes to global rivers and the UAE's seven emirates further emphasize the temple's theme of unity, incorporating stones sourced from across the Middle East.
Drawing from his United Nations experience, Tharoor characterized the temple as a "microcosm of the unity of creation," embodying the universal humanity he championed during his diplomatic career. He commended Pramukh Swami Maharaj's visionary foresight that inspired this magnificent project and acknowledged the UAE government's significant role, particularly Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed's insistence on preserving the temple's grandeur.
"And then when Narendra Modiji came and he managed to work with the government," Tharoor remarked. He highlighted the UAE's inclusive approach, noting that his team, including three Muslim colleagues, experienced no restrictions and were equally captivated by the temple's beauty.
The temple's immersive features, including a 15-minute animated digital cinema, enchanted Tharoor, who likened it to a "fairy tale" experience. Though he expressed regret at missing the Ganga Aarti ceremony, he pledged to return in the future.
Guided by Swami Brahma Vihari Das, Tharoor gained deeper insight into the profound intention behind every architectural detail, from intricate carvings to elaborate paintings, describing the temple as a "deeply moving" space where spiritual minds could find themselves completely immersed.
In our divided world, Tharoor envisions the temple as a pilgrimage destination not exclusively for Hindus but for people of all faiths, embodying religious unity. He urged using this sacred space as a platform to promote harmony, comparing it to a candle that could illuminate others during dark times.
Tharoor noted that the UAE's courage in fostering inclusivity sets a powerful global example. Feeling "blessed, moved, and uplifted" by his visit, he believes this experience came at a divinely ordained time and hopes it won't be his last, encouraging others to witness this "must-see" architectural and spiritual marvel.
