Sakiyna Thompson, a 31-year-old woman, has been found guilty of first-degree murder in the death of 23-year-old Kayla Hodgson in Tamarac, Florida, which occurred in July 2022, according to the New York Post. The murder appears to have been motivated by jealousy over Thompson's ex-boyfriend's relationship with Hodgson.
On Tuesday, a jury determined that Thompson murdered her ex-boyfriend's new girlfriend after being blocked on social media platforms by Hodgson.
Thompson, who was two months pregnant at the time of the incident, claimed during her testimony that she experienced a blackout during the event. Upon regaining consciousness, she realized she had fatally wounded Hodgson.
"I was walking in the blood," Thompson testified in the Fort Lauderdale courtroom, maintaining that her actions were in self-defense.
"I killed her because she took the glass from the Hookah and slashed me across my stomach. I felt like she was trying to hurt my baby."
Prosecutors countered this narrative, arguing that the killing was premeditated, with "jealous and insecure" Thompson traveling from New York to Florida specifically to confront Hodgson.
Reports indicate that following the murder, Thompson changed into Hodgson's clothing, attempted to clean the crime scene, and disposed of evidence. She was subsequently apprehended in New York in August 2022 and extradited to Florida. Thompson now faces a potential life sentence.
Meanwhile, Hodgson's family and friends sought justice, and a GoFundMe campaign was established to cover funeral expenses.
