Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has drawn widespread criticism after transforming the Gaza Summit in Egypt into what many described as a Donald Trump appreciation event. Sharif lavished praise on the US President, referring to him as a "man of peace" and expressing gratitude for Trump allegedly preventing an India-Pakistan conflict.
During his address, Sharif announced that Pakistan would once again nominate Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize, claiming the US leader saved "millions of lives not only in South Asia but also in the Middle East." Trump appeared visibly pleased with the flattery, responding with, "Wow! I didn't expect that."
The excessive praise has sparked significant backlash on social media, with many Pakistanis expressing embarrassment over their leader's remarks. Prominent Pakistani politician and historian Ammar Ali Jan voiced his concerns on X (formerly Twitter), stating that "Shehbaz Sharif's constant and needless flattery of Donald Trump is a source of embarrassment for Pakistanis across the world."
Columnist SL Kanthan was particularly critical, writing on X: "Whenever Trump wants his shoes shined like never before, he invites Pakistan's tiny Prime Minister. Have never seen so much cringe in geopolitics."
Other social media users were equally disapproving. One user named Assad declared, "Shehbaz Sharif is an insult to the 240 million people of Pakistan," while another commented, "So, Shehbaz Sharif flattered Donald Trump earlier, too. He repeated the same lines in front of international media yesterday. Puppets have sold Pakistan for a few billion dollars."
During his five-minute speech at Sharm el-Sheikh, Sharif repeatedly endorsed Trump's claim of averting war between India and Pakistan. He characterized the day as "one of the greatest days in contemporary history" due to the peace achieved through Trump's efforts. Sharif further claimed that without Trump's intervention, the military tension between India and Pakistan "could've escalated to a level where no one would have lived to tell what happened."
The Pakistani Prime Minister concluded by stating that nominating Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize was "the least we can do for his love of peace," reiterating his belief that Trump is "truly a man of peace."
