Instagram is implementing default PG-13 content restrictions for teenage users, a measure that will prevent them from modifying these settings without parental consent, Meta announced on Tuesday.
Under this new policy, teen-specific accounts will only display content comparable to what is appropriate for PG-13 movies, excluding material related to sex, drugs, dangerous stunts, and similar inappropriate content.
"This includes hiding or not recommending posts with strong language, certain risky stunts, and additional content that could encourage potentially harmful behaviours, such as posts showing marijuana paraphernalia," Meta explained in their Tuesday blog post, describing this as their most significant update since introducing teen accounts last year.
Meta is additionally offering parents the option to implement even stricter content controls for their children.
These changes come amid ongoing criticism of social media's impact on children's wellbeing. While Meta previously committed to preventing inappropriate content from reaching teens, including material about self-harm, eating disorders, or suicide, implementation has been imperfect.
A recent investigation revealed that researcher-created teen accounts were recommended age-inappropriate sexual content, including "graphic sexual descriptions, the use of cartoons to describe demeaning sexual acts, and brief displays of nudity."
Furthermore, Instagram algorithms recommended "a range of self-harm, self-injury, and body image content" to teen accounts that could potentially harm young users experiencing mental health challenges or thoughts of self-harm and suicide.
Meta claims these new restrictions exceed previous safeguards. Teens will be unable to follow accounts regularly sharing "age-inappropriate content" or those with inappropriate usernames or bios, such as links to OnlyFans. If teens already follow such accounts, they'll no longer see or interact with their content, exchange messages, or view their comments on other posts. These restricted accounts will also be prevented from following teens, sending them private messages, or commenting on teen content.
The company stated it currently blocks certain searches related to sensitive topics like suicide and eating disorders, but will now expand these restrictions to include broader terms such as "alcohol" or "gore" - even when misspelled.
Meta confirmed the PG-13 guidelines will also apply to AI chats and experiences aimed at teenagers, "meaning AIs should not give age-inappropriate responses that would feel out of place in a PG-13 movie."
For parents seeking more comprehensive protection, Meta is introducing a "limited content" restriction option that will block additional content and remove teens' ability to see, leave, or receive comments on posts.
