Trump asserted his conflict resolution record was "pretty good"
Washington:
US President Donald Trump has claimed his threats of imposing tariffs were the key factor in establishing peace between India and Pakistan during their military confrontation earlier this year. While speaking to journalists during his flight to the Middle East for an Israel-Hamas prisoner exchange, Trump stated he had successfully resolved eight global conflicts.
He also referenced the ongoing border issues between Pakistan and Afghanistan, suggesting he would address this situation as well, highlighting his self-proclaimed expertise in "solving wars."
"I resolved several conflicts simply by using tariffs. Take India and Pakistan, for instance. I told them, 'If you're planning to engage in warfare while possessing nuclear weapons, I'll impose substantial tariffs on both nations—100 percent, 150 percent, even 200 percent,'" Trump explained to reporters while en route to Egypt for a peace summit where an Israel-Hamas ceasefire is anticipated to be formalized.
"I declared I was implementing tariffs. I managed to resolve that conflict within 24 hours. Without the leverage of tariffs, settling that war would have been impossible," he added.
India has consistently denied the United States' assertions about intervening in Operation Sindoor or the subsequent ceasefire with Pakistan.
Since the truce announcement in May 2025 following Operation Sindoor, Trump has frequently claimed significant involvement in preventing military escalation, often crediting his trade and tariff policies. However, New Delhi maintains that the decision to suspend hostilities resulted from direct communications between military leadership on both sides, without external mediation.
Regarding his future focus, Trump stated that the Gaza ceasefire would be the eighth conflict he has resolved and indicated his intention to address tensions between Kabul and Islamabad next.
"This will mark the eighth war I've resolved, and I understand there's currently conflict between Pakistan and Afghanistan. I said, 'That will need to wait until my return. I'm handling another situation first.' Because I excel at resolving wars," he remarked aboard Air Force One.
Trump further asserted that his conflict resolution track record was "pretty good," as he positioned himself for next year's Nobel Peace Prize nominations.
"Consider some conflicts that persisted for years. We had one lasting 31 years, another for 32, and one for 37 years, with millions of casualties in each country. I managed to resolve each one, typically within a day. That's quite remarkable... It's an honor to do this work. I've saved millions of lives," he stated.
Addressing why he hadn't received a Nobel Prize, he explained, "To be fair to the Nobel committee, the award was for 2024. This was selected for 2024. However, some suggest an exception could be made since numerous significant achievements occurred during 2025 that are completed and substantial. But I didn't pursue this for the Nobel Prize. I did it to save lives."
