Four individuals lost their lives and at least 20 others sustained injuries during a shooting incident at a restaurant on St. Helena Island, South Carolina on Sunday, according to the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office.
Law enforcement officers were dispatched to Willie's Bar and Grill just before 1 am where they discovered multiple victims with gunshot wounds, as stated in the sheriff's office release.
Authorities confirmed that among the wounded, four remain in critical condition.
The sheriff's office indicated they are conducting an investigation into the incident but refrained from providing additional details. Names of the deceased have not been released pending notification of their families.
According to officials, hundreds of people were present at the establishment when the shooting occurred.
"This is a tragic and difficult incident for everyone," the sheriff's office stated.
St. Helena Island is recognized as a cultural center for the Gullah Geechee people, descendants of African slaves. The establishment where the shooting took place promotes itself as serving authentic Gullah cuisine.
Mass shootings, defined by the Gun Violence Archive as incidents where four or more people are shot, have become increasingly prevalent in the United States over the past decade.
The American public remains largely divided along political lines regarding potential solutions, with Democratic voters typically supporting increased gun restrictions while Republicans advocate for gun rights and stronger enforcement of existing laws against violent crime.
