A devastating car accident near Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, on Sunday resulted in the deaths of three Qatari diplomats and left two others injured, according to an official statement from Qatar's embassy.

The incident occurred as numerous diplomats and official delegations had gathered in the popular Red Sea resort town to participate in negotiations aimed at securing a Gaza ceasefire and hostage release agreement.

According to Egyptian state-affiliated media outlet Al-Qahera News, the accident involved a vehicle carrying five Qatari nationals and an Egyptian driver. The crash reportedly happened after the driver lost control of the steering wheel.

In an official statement, the Qatari embassy in Cairo conveyed "deep sorrow and grief" regarding the tragic loss of the three diplomats.

"The deceased and injured individuals will be transported to Doha today on a Qatari aircraft," the embassy announced. "The two injured diplomats are currently receiving necessary medical treatment at Sharm El Sheikh International Hospital."

Qatar has been working alongside Egypt and the United States as key mediators in months of negotiations leading to the Gaza ceasefire, which Israel confirmed came into effect at 0900 GMT on Friday.

Sharm el-Sheikh is also scheduled to host a significant peace summit beginning Monday, which will be co-chaired by US President Donald Trump and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi. The high-level meeting is expected to bring together representatives from more than 20 countries, with the primary objective of ending the conflict in the Gaza Strip.
