Spanish police announced on Saturday that they had apprehended an individual after discovering 250 deceased animals, predominantly dogs, in an unsanitary warehouse that local media sources have described as "the breeding ground of horror".

According to the Civil Guard, the unauthorized facility located in the northwestern community of Meson do Vento exhibited "extremely poor" sanitary conditions and animal welfare standards, with enclosures "totally covered in excrement".

The deceased animals, which comprised 28 chihuahuas and numerous birds, were found "in different stages of decomposition, with some specimens even mummified," the authorities stated in an official release.

The Civil Guard successfully rescued 171 additional animals, including exotic and protected avian species such as macaws and cockatoos, which were discovered in life-threatening conditions.

The surviving creatures had resorted to feeding on the carcasses of dead animals due to the severe shortage of proper food and water.

Law enforcement detained the facility manager on multiple charges including animal abuse, unauthorized possession of protected species, and practicing veterinary medicine without proper qualifications.
