Nobel Peace Prize 2025: Award Amount and What Recipients Receive Beyond the Money

The Nobel Peace Prize 2025 announcement has sparked interest not only in the identity of the laureates but also in the substantial monetary award that accompanies this prestigious recognition.

Venezuela's opposition leader Maria Corina Machado has been honored with the Nobel Peace Prize for her dedicated efforts in promoting democratic values and opposing dictatorship in her homeland.

According to the official Nobel Peace Prize website, recipients are awarded 11 million Swedish kronor (SEK) as prize money.

Established in 1901 following the wishes outlined by Swedish inventor and chemist Alfred Nobel, the Nobel Prizes recognize individuals or organizations that have made exceptional contributions "to the greatest benefit of humankind." These awards are distributed across six categories: Peace, Literature, Physics, Chemistry, Physiology or Medicine, and Economic Sciences.

Alfred Nobel signed his last will and testament on November 27, 1895, approximately one year before his death. In this document, he allocated the majority of his fortune—exceeding SEK 31 million (equivalent to roughly SEK 2.2 billion in today's value)—to create a fund invested in "safe securities." The investment returns from this fund would be distributed annually as prizes to those whose work had significantly benefited humanity.

For the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize, there were 338 nominations, comprising 244 individuals and 94 organizations. This highlights not just the competitive nature of the selection process but also emphasizes the substantial reward that accompanies this globally recognized honor.

In addition to the monetary award, laureates receive a medal and a diploma during the ceremony.

The Peace Prize Medal was created through collaboration between Norwegian sculptor Gustav Vigeland and Swedish engraver Erik Lindberg. It was first presented at the award ceremony in 1902.

Initially, the medal was crafted from 23-carat gold and weighed 192 grams. Since 1980, the composition changed to 18-carat gold with a slightly increased weight of 196 grams, though its diameter has consistently remained at 6.6 cm.

The medal's front displays a relief portrait of Alfred Nobel, featuring his name and years of life inscribed along the border. The reverse side depicts three naked men embracing, symbolizing the international brotherhood that Nobel aimed to foster through the Peace Prize. The Latin inscription reads: "Pro pace et fraternitate gentium" (For peace and fraternity among peoples). Around the 5 mm thick edge, the words "Prix Nobel de la Paix," the award year, and the laureate's name are engraved.
