Trump Reconsiders Jared Isaacman for NASA Leadership Role Following Private Meetings

Jared Isaacman has garnered widespread support across the space industry and within Congressional circles.

According to a source familiar with the situation, Jared Isaacman and President Donald Trump have held multiple meetings in recent weeks to discuss revitalizing the fintech billionaire's nomination to head NASA.

Reconsidering the Elon Musk associate would represent a significant policy reversal for Trump after the White House withdrew the job offer in May, citing Isaacman's connections to Democratic politicians. This decision has left NASA without permanent leadership while the agency confronts funding challenges, workforce reductions, and the ambitious goal of returning astronauts to the lunar surface.

The source, speaking anonymously due to the confidential nature of the discussions, revealed that Trump has met in person with Isaacman, a SpaceX astronaut and executive chairman of Shift4 Payments Inc., multiple times recently to explore his vision for leading the space agency.

The source emphasized that President Trump has not reached a final decision and could potentially select another candidate. The NASA administrator position requires confirmation by the US Senate.

A White House official stated that no decisions have been finalized regarding the NASA Administrator position. When a decision is reached, Trump will announce it directly.

Isaacman provided no comment when contacted. NASA representatives did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The Transportation Department directed inquiries to NASA.

The US space agency has been under the leadership of Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy since July, with uncertainty about the duration of his tenure in this role.

Isaacman, who founded Shift4, stepped down as chief executive officer in June. The company's shares decreased 1.2% to $78.52 as of 2:10 p.m. New York time on Thursday.

Isaacman had secured backing from diverse segments of the space industry and Congress. He established a close alliance with Musk after investing an undisclosed amount of his personal wealth in two SpaceX missions.

However, the White House rescinded the nomination following a public disagreement between Musk and Trump that damaged their relationship. Trump stated that Isaacman would have been "inappropriate" as NASA administrator because he was a "very close friend" of Musk and NASA "is such a big part of Elon's corporate life."
