7.5 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Philippines: Students Take Shelter as Tsunami Warnings Issued

A powerful 7.5 magnitude earthquake hit the southern Philippines on Friday morning, causing panic and evacuation. Video footage shows university students ducking under chairs for protection while a hospital evacuated patients. The US Tsunami Warning System issued alerts for dangerous waves up to 3 meters high along coastal areas. This disaster comes just ten days after another earthquake killed 71 people in Cebu province, highlighting the vulnerability of the Philippines, which experiences approximately 800 earthquakes annually due to its location on the Pacific "Ring of Fire."

Strong tremors were felt around 9:30 am in the city, with the epicenter located 20 kilometres (approximately 12 miles) below the surface.

Edwin Jubahib, governor of the southern Philippine province of Davao Oriental, stated, "Some buildings were reported to have been damaged. It was very strong."

The US Tsunami Warning System issued an alert, warning that coasts within 300 kilometres (186 miles) of the earthquake's epicenter could experience dangerous waves. They also advised people in nearby coastal areas to seek higher ground, according to The Guardian.

The warning center also predicted that the earthquake might cause tsunami waves as high as 3 meters (about 10 feet) above normal sea levels on some Philippine coasts, affecting six coastal provinces surrounding Davao Oriental. Smaller waves were also possible in Indonesia and Palau.

This earthquake occurred just ten days after another deadly 6.9 magnitude earthquake in Bogo City, Cebu province, which claimed 71 lives. Situated on the Pacific "Ring of Fire," the Philippines experiences approximately 800 earthquakes annually.
