Donald Trump has long expressed his desire to receive the Nobel Peace Prize.
Washington:
The White House has officially branded Donald Trump as 'The Peace President' on Thursday, while Trump himself appeared doubtful about his chances of winning the Nobel Peace Prize despite claiming to have resolved 'seven' global conflicts. The US President, who has repeatedly asserted credit for mediating peace between India and Pakistan—contrary to New Delhi's official position—suggested that the Norwegian Nobel Committee "will find a reason" to deny him the global recognition he believes he deserves.
These remarks followed Trump's announcement that Israel and Hamas had reached an agreement on the first phase of a Gaza ceasefire, after several days of indirect negotiations in Egypt.
When questioned at the White House about his prospects for winning the prize, which will be announced Friday, Trump responded, "I have no idea... Marco (Secretary of State Rubio) would tell you we settled seven wars. We're close to settling an eighth. I think we'll end up settling the Russia situation...I don't think anybody in history has settled that many," referring to American diplomatic efforts regarding Israel-Hamas and Russia-Ukraine conflicts.
Although several countries have nominated Trump, he expressed concern that "perhaps they'll (the Nobel Committee) find a reason not to give it to me."
While Trump maintained his skepticism, the White House proceeded to share an image of the Republican leader captioned, "The Peace President".
THE PEACE PRESIDENT.
The Republican leader has consistently coveted the Nobel Peace Prize, frequently questioning why his predecessor, Barack Obama, received the award during his first year in office. By comparison, Trump often highlights his own peace agreement record, which he suggests surpasses that of other leaders.
Many in Trump's circle, aware of his susceptibility to flattery, have made considerable efforts to nominate him for the award, even after the January 31 deadline. Trump was previously nominated during his first term but did not win.
Pakistan is among the nations that nominated Trump for the Nobel Prize. On June 20, Islamabad announced its intention to recommend Trump for a Nobel Peace Prize for his "decisive diplomatic intervention and pivotal leadership during the recent India-Pakistan crisis."
This followed Trump's claim of mediating peace between the two nuclear-armed neighbors after their military confrontation in May. India has not acknowledged any US role in the ceasefire. New Delhi maintains that the ceasefire occurred after Pakistan's Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) contacted his Indian counterpart requesting an immediate truce, as Pakistan was in a desperate position following India's military strikes.
