A 30-year-old American substitute teacher has been arrested and faces criminal charges after allegedly engaging in inappropriate electronic communication with a minor student. Krystal Sims from Cave City was charged with a felony for using electronic communication to solicit, procure or promote sexual activity with a minor.
The Barren County Sheriff's Office initiated an investigation after discovering evidence that Sims had contacted a male minor student with the intention of arranging a sexual encounter, according to a uniform citation obtained by WCLU Radio.
Deputies reported that the minor stated Sims became his substitute teacher shortly before she sent him a friend request on Snapchat, which he accepted. Following this connection, the two reportedly began discussions about meeting in Cave City.
According to records, the student recorded a phone conversation from August 22 in which a woman asked if he would meet her. The recording reportedly captured part of their conversation before transitioning to a video call, during which Sims allegedly appeared naked in the shower with her breasts exposed.
The student claimed that several people present during the video call confirmed witnessing this incident, as reported by The New York Post.
When questioned by deputies in early October, Sims acknowledged that the voice on the recorded call was indeed hers. However, she denied meeting the student in person, claiming that the communication was merely to allow the student to apologize "for the way he had acted in class."
She insisted there was never any physical contact between them and that they never met outside of the classroom environment. Sims also told police that while working as a substitute teacher, several male students attempted to connect with her on social media, but she declined these requests.
Sims was taken into custody at the Barren County Detention Centre on October 2 and was subsequently released on October 6 after posting a $25,000 bond. Her court proceedings are scheduled for October 8.
The charge of "procuring a minor by electronic means" is a serious criminal offense that could result in significant legal consequences if Sims is convicted.
As of now, the specific school district where Sims worked as a substitute teacher remains undisclosed, and neither her legal representative nor the district has issued any public statement regarding the matter.
